About
The MiG‑23MLD is the final frontline variant of the MiG‑23, featuring a single engine, swept wings, and upgraded vortex generators on its wings to allow higher angle-of-attack maneuverability. It also adds two top-mounted dispensers—each with 15 flares and 15 chaff—along with the Sapfir‑23MLA‑II radar and R‑24 missile capability, entering service in 1982
Playstyle
A flexible climb-and-dogfight aircraft: sweep wings back for speed and acceleration, flight quickly to altitude, then split the wings forward to turn. At low speeds and forward sweep, it gains tighter turning at the cost of energy retention. Radar is basic but includes MTI to detect low-altitude targets. Missiles include R‑24R/T for BVR and R‑73 for close combat
Pros and Cons
Pros
➕ High top speed and climb thanks to strong TWR (1.18)
➕ Variable-sweep wings boost acceleration and turn flexibility
➕ MTI radar improves detection under heavy clutter
➕ Includes both BVR (R‑24 family) and IR (R‑73) missiles
Cons
➖ Low roll rate (~151°/s) limits quick maneuvers
➖ Struggles in high-speed turning—best energy levels are needed
➖ Radar range is short for its tier
➖ Limited missile loadout
